Meet The Comedians Behind The Mic
SPEAKER_01Welcome to the funny together plot. Let's get started. Hey, how we doing?
unknownGood.
SPEAKER_01We're so excited to have with us today Kay Dodd, all the way from Atlanta, Georgia. And of course, Chris Young from the big town of Gregory, Michigan. All right. And of course, I am from Rhode Island. If you've never heard of it, it is a real estate. We are so excited because this is our first time with Kay and Chris together and actually separate on the pot. So one of the things I love to do is just to let's talk about how did we first meet. How did we first meet? See if you can remember that. Kay, do you remember our first meeting?
SPEAKER_00Oh, I do. You had it on a flaming red dress and a black boa. And uh we were at not really. Um we were uh in Atlanta here. Um not in actually in this uh suburb of Atlanta at uh church for the uh Christian Comedy Association, and it was your first year there. Um my third year there, I think that was 2015. 2015. So yeah, we've known each other a hot minute.
SPEAKER_01Can you imagine 11 years we've known each other?
SPEAKER_00No, yeah, so it's crazy.
SPEAKER_01Uh I I can't believe I'm 11 years older. That's not even fair.
SPEAKER_00I know, right? Um, oh I meant to say we were nine when we met. So we were so young when we met. So it was like camp. Yeah, it was like camp. And I met Chris at this uh through the same organization, but in Nashville uh a couple years later. Um I think we decided we determined that was 2017 in Mount Juliet, Tennessee.
SPEAKER_01And uh so yeah. So Chris, is that is that our first meeting then too?
SPEAKER_03Um we had in person, right? So I think we did the uh one of your radio shows prior to that or your funny together, um not funny together, the other thing.
SPEAKER_01Uh Talk is cheap. We had done that's I started that I think in two uh uh during COVID. So okay, so maybe not.
SPEAKER_03Uh maybe not then.
SPEAKER_01Maybe that I'm maybe we would make an impression on each other and Chris's. No, I met, but we don't remember uh full-on meeting.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, no, I I think that was the the where we met person at the same uh thing that where we met Kay, the uh Christian comedy association there. Um but I yeah, maybe we had talked, I don't know, previous to that about something or somewhere, but uh I'll go back to yeah, that was where we we all met and we sang kumbaya.
SPEAKER_01But we did spend more time together on my uh online show. You were on the guest um several times.
SPEAKER_03A couple times, yeah, it was a lot of fun.
SPEAKER_01Really fun. So I'm excited to have you on the the uh the pot. So um excited to get this started. That's kind of what inspired me to get this going. You know, I really wanted to um I missed my Tacus Cheap show and missed, you know, kind of hanging out with everybody. And so I was like, yeah, I think it's time. I think it's time.
SPEAKER_02Time to bring it back. Plus, I can't wait.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and plus I can't wait to, I haven't done any shows with you um on the tour yet, and so I can't wait to be able to do that too. Um, you know, we're we're looking to keep booking and to we want everybody that's on the team to be able to, you know, jump on some shows. And Kay, we just recently um did some shows together in Georgia in March. Yeah, so uh so hopefully we can get you back on some shows too. So we are we're working on it, we're working on it here. So um there's um there's a lot of people that need to laugh out there and absolutely yes, there's nothing better than to do it with some some clean, spectacular, funny comedy. So so we're excited about that.
Summer Weather And Road Life
SPEAKER_02Absolutely.
SPEAKER_01So um right now we're recording this, it's during the um summer months, and um, I don't know when it's going to be aired, but it's summer right now. And I'm really enjoying that. Uh I love the warmer weather. I know Kay gets a little bit warmer weather all the time, so you're probably not as loving it. Am I right?
SPEAKER_00Oh no, you can't, it's 118 degrees in the shade, um, with like 98% humidity. Um it's the Georgia is Georgia. We call it the bipolar weather state because it it just can change on a dime. In a same, I mean within the same day. Yeah. Within the same day. Um, yeah, we've we've literally had back in the uh late part of the winter, we had tornado warnings that morning and it snowed that night. I kid you not.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, that's crazy. Michigan, we get four in a day. We can get winter, summer, spring, then uh then whatever else, uh smoke, locusts, all those other things we can get all in one day.
SPEAKER_01So we really get in the smoke, right? From Canada right now.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it was bad. The other uh today's not as bad because the wind shifted a little bit, but we're supposed to be back in that. But what's going on up there, man, is is really heartbreaking. Just years and years of compounded drought, just you know, just here we are. So, but yeah, it was it was bad. It it at my house, I mean, you could see the smoke just rolling through.
SPEAKER_01Oh wow, wow, yeah, definitely great for Canada for sure. Um, but anyway, yeah. We've got a little bit of smoke, and we do have four seasons in a day, so I get that. In New England, you never know what it changed, you just go outside and it and it could change, you know. We know it's uh snow, sun, uh torrential downpours, uh you know, flooding. We get it all. We get it all here in New England. It makes it more fun, right? All right, you guys. Um, we are going to start our first segment or second segment. Are you ready?
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
Why Eating Out Feels Different Now
SPEAKER_01All right, and today's topic, of course, is my favorite because we're kind of talking about food again. Um, we're talking about restaurant experiences. Um, you guys have first of all, do you like to go out to eat? Because not everybody does.
SPEAKER_00Oh, I love I love to go out to eat.
SPEAKER_01And what about you too?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I like to go Yeah, I like to go out to eat. I'm finding myself more and more though, being like the old people. I like to go early uh instead of waiting all night. So uh the early bird special is becoming my friend.
SPEAKER_01I hear you on that. It's like dinner at four instead of like or five, and now I'm like six o'clock, seven o'clock. Okay, crazy. This is nuts, unless you're on the road, and then any time is a dinner time, right?
SPEAKER_03And yeah, I don't know if you guys have found like after, right? So now we judge everything BC and AC. So before COVID and after COVID, right? So after COVID, doesn't it seem like more things are now closed when you want to get stuff to eat at night than they used to be?
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah, they close earlier now. Uh they they all all the even fast food restaurants are closing like at least an hour earlier than what they used to. Um, even Goodwill. I mean, I know we're talking about restaurants, but uh let me just let me just throw my favorite boutique in there. They close at eight o'clock now. I'm like, really? Where are y'all going? What what what are you gonna do?
SPEAKER_03You never know when you're gonna need that leisure suit after nine.
SPEAKER_00You you work at Goodwill. Why are you leaving at eight? Um so yeah, things just definitely changed. Uh schedules, uh attitudes, everything.
SPEAKER_01I agree. I I I agree. Like everything closes so early. And even weekends, like weekends you know, so say you're you know, you're out on the road and and you've um show, and then so I don't know about you guys, but I can't really eat prior to doing a show, so I'm starving after a show. Like that's all I'm thinking about. It's like what can I eat? And I'm so disappointed that a lot of things it's like there's very few restaurants that are actually open now.
SPEAKER_00Can I say a restaurant name? Is that how you I mean of course they might they might be a sponsor? Um Zaxby's drive-thru has a picture of what looks like a really uh wonderful grilled cheese. It's just good photography. It it rhonda and I had one after a show when we were when we did that funny together tour here in Georgia, and we literally needed an IV to be able to swallow it. It was so dry, it looked like it was just oozing cheese, and it looked like this wonderful Texas toast. And I think it was a Ritz cracker with you know a piece of American cheese on it. Sorry, Zax, but you gotta do better than that. Um, and and we were literally like out the drive-thru, they were closing at 11. It was like 10:59 and a half. And so we had to make the request we have yet. We had to make a decision, a snap deserves like grilled cheese. Like, who gets a grilled cheese at a chicken place? But we did, and we wanted something light, right?
SPEAKER_01But here's the thing the picture, Chris, like the picture of that grilled cheese. I was like, uh look at that. That's good photography.
SPEAKER_03I need that.
SPEAKER_01I'm like, oh, this look at it. It's it was grilled perfectly, the cheese would look all ooey-gooey, and then we've got the sandwich that looked like your mother made you in the 50s. You know what I'm saying? It was just so sad, and I'm like, this is actually that's that's an insult to the 50s mom's uh grilled cheese sandwiches, you know, because it was it was the saddest little grilled cheese that I'd ever seen in my life, and we laughed, but you know, we laughed about that, but the fraud we we ate it because I would have eaten the wrapper that it came in.
SPEAKER_00Uh we were so hungry, but um we we did eat it. Um but yeah, late night, late night eating, there's always some fun experiences.
SPEAKER_03And it used to be, right? It used to be Denny's because they're always open, right? And then you go, uh might have a few choices. Now that is the only choice, and and if the if they're even open anymore.
SPEAKER_00Well, here, and and I know they're not everywhere, but Waffle House was uh created and founded and is headquartered here in Georgia. So there are like waffle houses on uh there'll be a Waffle House across the street from each other, and right I like you get off a certain exit south of the interstate, and there's one this way and one this way right there, right? And I think that's because the DOT went to Waffle House and said we cannot have alcoholics turning left on this highway, so we need one on each.
SPEAKER_03You gotta do it, you gotta make this so it flows.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, that's funny.
unknownThat's really funny.
What A Perfect Restaurant Night Looks Like
SPEAKER_01Um so what we're gonna talk about is all right, you're you're going out to eat. Um describe to me, Chris, what what is your like perfect experience? What is your expectation of going out to eat every day? Whatever restaurant, you know, you can do fine dining or um whatever you choose.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, so I I think it has to start right, so it has to be for me sort of like not super pretentious, right? Um not super pretentious, but but not like everybody wearing their pajamas there either, right? So um right, not no juicy gym shorts. I'm good, uh, you know, at least have some some okay clothes on. Um uh starts with a right uh and right now being uh I'm in Michigan, the heart of the outbreak of the explosive, you know, diarrhea due to salads. I like a good salad, right? Um one that doesn't harm you. Some right, some some yeah, right? So it doesn't none of the the I gotta be going salad, right? Literally. Um then then then some some nice you know bread or something like that. Uh uh, I'm a meat guy, uh, so good good, you know, steak. Um I like vegetables, so it can be potato or it can be steamed vegetables, and then something simple, but something they have to always do for me is like I I drink a lot of water, so uh someone coming to check on that. And um I I'm like you know, somewhere under the $50 range, you get you go somewhere to like the the Roost Chris and things like that, and they have to add everything in. I'm like, yeah, I could have bought the whole side of beef for that when I'm done.
SPEAKER_01No a la carte.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Um then you know I I know this sounds crazy, but the uh a lot of people, you know, sort of poo-poo them, but that that two for twenty-five special, uh uh now it's a little more, but um usually is a safe bet somewhere. The steak and the salad and the the whatever comes with it.
SPEAKER_02You want a deal too.
SPEAKER_03You're you're uh Yeah, oh yeah, right? Yeah, unless I mean unless someone else is paying, but even then I'm like, you know. Um yeah, so I don't know, it uh whatever, even even some places that have some good fried chicken. But usually, you know, if you're going out to have a good steak or a burger or something, um you want you want it to be there's something there and and it tastes good and you feel like you got something and you're not like okay, where do I gotta stop on my way home to pick something else up to eat?
SPEAKER_01You don't want to leave hungry.
SPEAKER_03Right, yeah.
unknownGot it.
SPEAKER_01I got it. What about you, Kay?
SPEAKER_00Um, you know, for me, uh my taste and my um well, my budget has changed, but you know, I used to eat a lot of fast food just for, you know, budgetary, budgetary reasons. And my ideal place would be like a a drive-thru and a car wash uh together and just go through the drive-thru. Get your food and then eat it as you go through the car wash. Um, and I do that sometimes because we actually have Chick-fil-A and the car wash I use is right next door. So that's why I thought of that. But um I think that one of my favorite um, you know, years ago when I worked in uh for sales and marketing, um, Fortune 500 companies, um we we had some really fancy schmancy. I mean, it was almost like stuff I had to ask, you know, like what is this? Where did it come from? And what part of the body is is that from? Um, you know, the the I think it's I can't remember if it's like the liver or something in a lobster. It's like like this delicacy, it's green, it's nasty. And I was I was actually grateful when I became allergic to shellfish because I was like, I never have to eat that again. But one of my sales guys just insisted that I try it, and I thought it was nasty, but um, but the um, so the roofs, Chris, uh, you I mean, you go there now, there's one not far from here. I got a stick of asparagus for $30. Um, I love, I love that place. They'll they'll let you um they'll let you smell the steak for ten dollars extra. Um but um I think one of my favorite experiences, it you know, because life threw some curveballs the last several years. So there's a lot of restaurants I haven't even gotten a try yet. But one of my great fun uh experiences was my first time at Cheesecake Factory. Not only did you have me at Cheesecake Um Factory through me because I thought I was gonna have to, you know, work a line or something.
SPEAKER_03Um but boosting an apple style, right?
SPEAKER_00I ordered this salad that had um, I don't even know what they are. It was it was almost like it was almost like they were twigs. It was like a hut. I ordered a salad that was it was piled so high with all of these things, I literally thought there might be some children living inside inside that little hut. But it and it just it was like the endless bowl of salad. And then of course, you know, there's this $75 piece of cheesecake that you get afterwards. The salad was, you know, like five dollars, but the cheesecake is I think that's where they make their money. But yeah, so that that's probably one of my um my favorite, but I eat I eat out a lot, and because my tastes have changed and I just don't accept some of the preservatives and the fat, you know, that's in the some of the fast food. I have certain fast food places, my go-to places, but uh I'll I'll do the double dollar sign now when I'm looking for a place because you know it's like the double dollar sign means that uh uh they they they went a little bit up uh on the ingredients or a little down on the preservatives, a little up on the better quality ingredients. So so yeah, we you know, I toured with uh a a couple of different companies and um so we we always uh we do not always, but we do a lot of taverns um because you can get some really good, you know, burger really good healthy protein.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00And so anyway, so protein is king.
SPEAKER_01Um well for me, it's about all of it. Like I um I care about where I sit. I do. It matters to me where I sit. I don't want to sit in the door, I I do want to sit at a booth, you know. Yeah, like because they're more comfortable. I want to be comfortable, and and that's why, you know, like don't put me in a chair in the back or don't put me in a chair that's like I just I want to be comfortable. Um I um I mean and I want the food to be, you know, really, you know, good. I want it to be good. Um I want I do love I do love bread. When they serve, you know, like I love when they serve you a little something like I love carbs. And like when they serve you bread with like really good butter, or if they serve you bread with like oil to you know, dipping in. And so that matters to me. A good salad that doesn't um hurt you afterwards. Um I dressing. Like these are things that will make me actually go to the restaurant, like a good salad dressing, and I I love blue cheese dressing. And and either you love it or need it, I think. I don't think there's a middle road with blue cheese, but there are some really great blue cheese dressings out there. And so yeah, you know, and usually honestly, I order chicken, so good chicken dishes. I I I I love chicken. I probably could eat it every single day. Day. Um, and then I don't always have dessert. And I usually don't because I've usually built up on the bread. Like I I think sometimes I'd rather have bread um than dessert. So um, but I, you know, I'll share dessert with you. I and I don't want to like wait forever for the chip or refills. I like, you know, you're thirsty. I think that's what makes a good uh server. Um you know, we want we don't want to be like trying to, you know, or you fork fell on the ground and now you can't eat um because you're like, you know, and the server's like, you know, in the land of the lost somewhere. So I think those things matter to me anyway. But oh my gosh, it's going by so fast our time. We are getting
Two Truths And A Lie Games
SPEAKER_01ready. This is Kay's favorite. God, it's time to play our game because I have to end with a game, and I know K Dot is not a gamer, you guys. She doesn't love games, but she does play them um because I need her. So uh we are playing Two Truths and a Lie. And the theme today is your favorite activity or hobby. So um does anybody wanna go first? Uh yeah, um all right, go ahead, Chris.
SPEAKER_03All right, yeah, what are my one yeah, two true two two truths?
SPEAKER_01Two truths and a lie, and then we're gonna see what we'll see if you're a good liar or not.
SPEAKER_03Okay. Um like to be outdoors, uh like to uh fish, and I like to color.
SPEAKER_01Okay, that was fast. Like there's no explanation.
SPEAKER_03So what do you want you want you want more explanations?
SPEAKER_01Outdoors is one.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_01So fishing is with the outdoors, I'm presuming.
SPEAKER_03Okay, yeah, so like like to do that, uh albeit I don't get to do that much. Uh like to go look at obviously go be in lakes and water. Uh that's that. Um what else? What it was the that that I made that too, so that can be one. Uh I like to hear uh hear people describe politics.
SPEAKER_01And you like to color? Did you say you like to color?
SPEAKER_03No, that that was the yeah, I so that that was the I'm sorry, that was the other joke. I don't like to hear the the other one either. So since we we took out since we took out the outdoors, uh obviously then like to go eat.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so what are the three? I am so confused right now.
SPEAKER_03Okay, I'm sorry. Yep, like to be like to be outdoors, uh like to go out to eat. Yeah, and I like to color.
SPEAKER_01And you like to color? And what was the third one?
SPEAKER_03Uh like to go go out to eat, right?
SPEAKER_01Oh, I'll go out to eat. So, all right, all right. Okay, I think he likes to go out to eat. I think he likes to fish. Um, I'm gonna say you don't like to color. What do you think, Kay?
SPEAKER_00Um, I agree. I I don't think he colors.
SPEAKER_01And and what is it, Chris?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and don't don't do much coloring. Not even on the place, not not even at the placemat where I have to go out to eat most often.
SPEAKER_00I was wondering, is like he is he getting the shoney's placemat and taking it to the table with the three crayons that break the minute you use them. Okay.
SPEAKER_01All right, all right, go ahead, okay.
SPEAKER_00Um, okay, mine are somewhat weird. I do uh well, I like I like crafts.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Um I like to buy them more than I like to do them. Um I get that. Um I have high aspirations to do them. Um I actually love playing the clarinet and I love to declutter. I absolutely uh love to declutter.
SPEAKER_03My my guess looking at her kitchen, I would say the declutter is a truth.
SPEAKER_01Is that I think she definitely declutters. I think she does buy crafts, and we don't know if she does them. I I'm gonna say clarinet, though. You don't play the clarinet. What do you think, Chris?
SPEAKER_03I don't I don't think so.
SPEAKER_00Okay, um, that is true. I don't know, but I did in um sixth and seventh grade. My my music my music teacher begged me to stay in in music and join the band in high school, and I was like, oh no, I think I'm gonna drink instead, and so that was too much of academia for me. So, but yeah, those are the two truths, crafts and and I I do love to declutter it.
SPEAKER_01So well you I love that, so I think you should come over and make you I could make you happy for months anyway. Um all right, here's here we go. For me, I love to go to the theater, I love to go to plays. Um from plays that are maybe amateur, you know, theater to you know Broadway. Um I uh I love to go bike riding, it's invigorating, and um I don't know ever since I was a little kid, that's something that I love to do is just jump on my bike. It doesn't have a basket now, but whatever. And lastly, I love to visit museums and because I love to see um what it what what it was, especially you know, like uh museums that showed like um how people lived at one time or or another, or just even artifacts that that were okay. So that's my three. The theater, the fight, and the museums.
SPEAKER_03Um I would say the theater is probably a true.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I would say the museum is true. I don't believe the bike.
SPEAKER_03No. I've met her. I would say the bike is probably the uh the lie there.
SPEAKER_01The the bike is so the lie. I don't even own a bike and I haven't since I was a child. I did like to ride my bike when I was a kid, but like the thought of riding a bike now, even in a gym, um, gives me uh adopt.
SPEAKER_00But um the thing that I find so wrong with like the great outdoors is that it's outside. And hello, and and I and I know Rhonda and I have that.
SPEAKER_01I'm not I mean I'll go to an outdoor mall, you know, because I mean you know, yeah, and I don't mind walking around it, like that's fine, but I'm not gonna ride my bike there. Um anyway, well, we all aren't very good liars, and so uh we're very good at detecting lies, so there's that.
SPEAKER_03All right, and don't and don't you think though that that plays into the comedic sort of you know MO that we're really not great liars because if we were such like where the lie was so true that we couldn't tell it, people wouldn't come on board with us, that they know we're sort of bringing them along in this sort of good story and not just this is a uh a total fabrication that there's got to be, you know, we we we also believe it's not true.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely. I think I think there's truth to our um to our comedy. We it might be a little exaggerated, but there's definitely I don't talk about how much I'd love to ride a bike um in my set. So that's true. All right. Oh my goodness, this is going by so fast.
Tour Plugs And Henry Ford Quote
SPEAKER_01What I want to do now is um uh first of all, thank you so much, Kay and Chris. And um, we will have their information in the show notes, but so definitely go check them out and um check them out on the Fight Together tour as well. Um, but you can check them out on their websites and see where they're at. They're both very funny. Um both uh I would definitely recommend highly. Obviously, they're they're on the tour. So um, but I want to part with a uh quote uh by Henry Ford. Whether you think you can or you think you can't, you're absolutely right. All right, this is the Funny Together Pod. Thanks for listening until next time.
